Olsen-Zwillinge - Gemeinsame Nasen-OP?

Ready to rock…

Hey y’all.

So, the SXSW music has officially begun…

As I was waiting “to rock,” I watched several documentaries here, while it rained cats and dogs outside:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

(This movie theater really floats my boat because they serve yummy food and drinks to you while you take in your flick…Just be careful not to spill anything on yourself in the dark, like I did.)

I also wandered around town and took in all the oddities, like this inspiring, well-known house, bearing Austin’s quirk-is-cool slogan–”KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD“–all over its facade:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

(Do you see the legs poking out of the ground, too? Bizarre…but fun, right?)

Oh, and a blog from Austin would be incomplete without some more food photos. My friends and I had Mexican food last night at this joint:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

We indulged in my FAVORITE appetizer there–QUESO. Are you a fan of queso, too? For some reason, the Mexican restaurants in California have no concept of this cuisine. It will change your life. Trust me:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Well, it’s better than it looks…

Okay, enough about food…

NOW it’s time to get busy scouring the music schedule. I must figure out how I’m going to fit everything in…

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The music schedule (above) is big and thick–sometimes even too heavy to carry around all day…(Oh, and my apologies to “Todd” for the Longhorns hat…but, hey, I am in Austin, home of the Longhorns.)

Anyway…Thank you all for your music suggestions! I’m going to try my best to make it to see all the cool bands you recommend.

But with this town being as crazy as it is right now, sometimes things don’t always go according to plan…Cissi, I tried to go and see Marit Larsen today, like you suggested. I even ran through downtown with a serious blister on my foot in an effort to make it to Marit’s day show just so I could take a picture for you…

…But when I arrived, Marit’s cellist was packing up, and the next band was doing their sound check. Bummer. So I took this photo of one of the little postcards Marit’s people had left strewn on all the tables to prove to you I tried!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

(Marit says “hi,” Cissi&hellip

As I was snapping this photo, the next band, The Storys, began playing:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

…I have to say, from what I heard, they’re not really my style…

Here’s what I have on my must-see list tonight…Obviously there are some conflicts…so, if you wanna chime in and give me your vote on who I should choose, please don’t hesitate to comment…

9:00…Tosca String Quartet and Lambchop

10:00…Kaki King (the guitar wunderkind)

11:00…Badly Drawn Boy (acoustic) OR Architecture in Helsinki OR Octopus Project (WHICH ONE????)

12:00…Aqueduct

1:00…Do Make Say Think OR Menomena (WHICH ONE????)

Let me know if there’s someone else I should see, too!

Then stay tuned for my detailed live music report coming soon…

Yo. Yo. Yo.

So, the response to the last “p.s.” post was so overwhelming that Mary-Kate, Ashley, and I have decided that we’re going to launch a BATTLE OF THE BANDS here on this site.

Get ready to rock. More details to come soon.

But, in the meantime, tell all your musician friends (only unsigned bands or independent recording artists can qualify–no major label acts) to come here to this blog and leave comments telling us about their music. That’s ultimately how you’ll be able to enter to qualify as one of our 10 finalists in the final BATTLE OF THE BANDS play-off. Leave us a comment here on the blog, leave us a link to your web page or MySpace page (wherever we can listen to your music), and then you’re in for your chance to be in the Top 10…Online voting for the BATTLE OF THE BANDS will begin here, at mary-kateandashley.com, April 9th.

Can’t wait to hear what you come up with!

p.s., Kev, Lil Hospital sounds awesome, and Kate, we took a listen to Ruinsgarden. Awesome drumming!

Hey, I forgot to ask: Do any of YOU guys have bands or music projects of your own? If so, I’d love to hear more about them. I’m kinda in that spirit, in case you haven’t guessed that already.

My feet hurt…

Hey people. Just stopping in for a sec before I start my long day.
My feet ache. I am quickly re-learning the high price one must pay “to rock.”

Cheesy. But oh-so true.

I ended up seeing six shows last night, and I was blown away by almost everything (of all the bands I saw, Aqueduct was the least thrilling–musically–which is a huge disappointment, as I’m into his melodies).

First, we saw the Tosca String Quartet perform with Kurt Wagner from Lambchop (a “new” kind of Nashville). Old-school meets atonal classical. Very interesting:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I have to say the mega-talent of the ladies in the string quartet made me yearn for my old cello days big time.

(more to come about this show soon)

The band that opened up for them was also mega-impressive–The Hylazoists. Check them out when you get the chance. The whole symphony-turned-rock thing is really somethin’. (More on these guys later, too.)

Unfortunately, Cissi, we couldn’t see Badly Drawn Boy last night (but he’s playing again today…so we’re gonna try to catch him then). Instead, my Austin friends begged me to see The Octopus Project at Emo’s. At first I was reluctant because they appeared rather gimicky. But these guys were super tight…pure danceable, experimental techno-instrumental goodness. (They’ve also recently won a TON of awards in the Austin music scene.) Well worth checking out indeed. Stay tuned for my footage of Yvonne (the female “wizard” at the band’s helm) setting fire to her theramin!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Okay…off to more shows and awesome food (BBQ tomorrow!). I’ll try my best to check out everything you suggest and take pics and video for my final recap.

Don’t mess with Texas,

–the mystery blogger
p.s., are you designing a cover for the SXSW Soundtrack Love? I’d be very curious to see what you come up with for that one.

From Paris…to Texas…

Judas Priest. Talk about a major cram session. There’s so much to do and learn at SXSW (and in this town) that I’m actually getting a little stressed out about all the things I’m missing! Every minute counts. AND the music part of the festival hasn’t officially even started yet…

In case you don’t know, SXSW is a mega music, film, and interactive festival that happens every March in Austin, TX. Mary-Kate and Ashley sent me here to get the scoop…And I’m loving it.

As I explore the city, the shows, the screenings, the celebrity panels, and the parties, I’ll be stopping by this blog to give you the day-in-the-life deets here in this crazy, bustling, groovy place–AND TO ASK FOR YOUR OPINION ON WHERE I SHOULD GO AND WHO I SHOULD SEE… Consider the mystery blogger to be YOUR SXSW explorer. YOU tell me where to go, and I’ll take you there and give you the scoop.

Here’s the play-by-play of my time here so far:

• So, I arrived in Austin just before the interactive portion of the festival began. I was craving chicken fried steak—a staple cuisine in “these parts.” So my friends and I stopped by Hut’s, a classic Austin hole-in-the-wall burger joint to indulge ourselves:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Yum. This town is all about guilty pleasures…and, oftentimes…gravy.

• Then, the next day, the festival officially began. I made my way down to the Austin Convention Center to pick up my badge—my all-access key to getting into all the screenings, shows, and parties (!). Luckily, my badge is PLATINUM, which means I get to hang out at this place for free drinks and food in between events:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Good times indeed.

• My old friend, Internet Rockstar, Ben Brown, and his girlfriend Katie—whom I ran into outside the Convention Center after hearing Dan Rather give us his “What’s the Frequency Kenneth?” talk on the future of journalism in America—is not as lucky. Even though the Internet Rockstar was a SXSW panelist, he only had a gold badge (which means he can get into the Interactive and Film portions of the festival, but NOT the music). Poor Internet Rockstar (you still look happy though):

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

• As I wandered around downtown Austin, running into more friends and doing a lot of people watching (this is a great place for it!), I ran into this guy, one of several odd birds (er, rabbits) walking around this city in bizarre regalia, promoting their various projects:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

• As I’ve been waiting for the music portion of the week to start, I’ve been watching awesome movies and listening to top filmmakers (and Internet Rockstars) speak about their “craft.” But the highlight of my time here so far has to be last night’s Austin Chronicle party, where I saw Austin band What Made Milwaukee Famous perform. I was pretty impressed—especially with the drummer’s powerful skills. This band, at times, sounds a lot like The Shins—but stronger and more intense.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

So, I’m off to another screening. But I want to remind you to give me your pointers: Take a look at the SXSW music schedule and tell me what bands YOU think I should see. (Be sure and look at all the days listed). Then comment on the blog with your suggestions, and I’ll go and take videos and pics for you and post ‘em here!

Warum geht Mary-kate so Krum ??
